Binding has scuffing, damp spots. Fore-edge of boards have been badly damped so the red dye of the cloth has turned a mottled pink. Rear board has been more affected than front board. Spine is sunned. Rear flyleaf and pastedown have picked up some of the damping and have a pink colour. Text is toned. A publishers note placed loosely within the book notes that this edition has thinner paper and some of the illustrations and extraneous text have been removed to permit this volume to be taken along when travelling. It also states the book is the "same in both paging and matter as the complete subscription editions". Excellent reading copy. Illustrations throughout.

The author writes of her family and father, who was a Methodist minister in the Southeast. The father, W. A. Betts was born in Blockersville,North Carolina in 1857 and graduated from UNC in 1880 (her grandfather, also a methodist minister, had met Robert E. Lee). The father was in Cabarrus County in the 1870s and after marriage moved to Charleston, South Carolina. The family also lived in Atlanta and eventually ended up in Texas.

He received his education in Mississippi and at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. Later in life he made his home in Asheville, North Carolina but continued his association with Cumberland as well as Columbia Theological Seminiary in Decatur, Georgia.
