Description:
Glasgow: Sold Wholesale by J. Lumsden and Son, 1815. 24mo, pp. 47, [1]. 8 leaves of plates printed in sanguine included within pagination. Original salmon paper wrappers pasted to first and last leaves as issued, front wrapper lettered in ink. Wrappers somewhat soiled. An attractive religious chapbook, an unusual survival in original paper wrappers, with 16 illustrations printed in red. The BL’s catalogue entry (alone among the several holdings in Library Hub) says the illustrations are attributed to Thomas Bewick - this is doubtful although his workshop did produce blocks for Lumsden’s chapbooks around this time. Description:
London: John Murray, 1835. PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, pp. xx, [ii], 276. Original grey boards backed in buff cloth, printed paper label to spine. Some light spotting, a dampmark to lower margin. Binding lightly stained and soiled, extremities a touch worn. Armorial bookplate of J.C. Gaisford St Lawrence to front pastedown, flyleaf inscribed ‘With the Editor’s best respects’. A schoolbook edition of the Acharnians, edited by Thomas Mitchell (1783-1845), who had earlier published an important English translation of Aristophanes’s comedies. This copy was presented by Mitchell, probably to Thomas Gaisford (1779-1855), dean of Christ Church - Mitchell lived in Oxfordshire - though the bookplate is of Gaisford’s grandson Commander J. C. Gaisford St Lawrence (1862-1932), who had adopted his mother’s surname for reasons of inheritance, she being sole child of the third earl of Howth.

[Edinburgh?]: [s.n.], 1748. 8vo, pp. 17, [1]. Disbound. Trimmed close sometimes touching text, title-page printed askew and a little dust-soiled. Ink attribution ‘by Mr. Robert Forbes’ to title-page. An early and scarce printing of this Scots translation of an excerpt from Ovid by Robert Forbes. Little is known of him - he seems to have been born in Buchan but plied his trade as a hosier in London. Evidently an educated man who ‘possessed a large fund of the humorous,’ he also published another excerpt from Ovid and a few original pieces (Walker, The Bards of Bon-Accord 1375-1860, 1887). London: Printed for J. Bell, 1805. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xv, [i], 64. Modern half morocco in perfect period style, marbled boards, spine divided by triple gilt rules, second compartment gilt-lettered direct, others with small central gilt tool. Some minor spotting, a few leaves creased. Gift inscription to half-title: 'J. Ahern, the gift of his friend Wm. H. Sidell, 1827'. A scarce volume of love lyrics including translations from Catullus and Ovid and imitations of epigrams from the Greek Anthology. The editor signs the preface 'I.I.M.' and describes the author as 'a native of another hemisphere' raised 'under the genial influence of a more southern sun', who was 16 on his first visit to Britain, and 19 at the time of publication - the same age as the editor. This has more than a whiff of literary invention, and in fact the Trinity College Dublin copy contains a manuscript note attributing the work to Eaton Stannard Barrett (1785-1820). This seems plausible: the… Read More

Description:
Shrewsbury: Printed by J. Eddowes, 1776. FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. viii, 130. Extracted from a volume with portion of leather spine remaining. Half-title discarded. Some minor spotting. The first edition of this scarce tract on the American Revolution by the naturalised clergyman John William Fletcher (d. 1785), born Jean Guillaume de la Flechere in Switzerland before moving to England at the age of 21. A skilled preacher of Methodist tendencies, Fletcher was close with John and Charles Wesley but disappointed them by not seeking to rise beyond the living of Madeley in Shropshire. This did however leave him time to write and he became 'a prolific and meticulously detailed writer'. This is the longer of two tracts in the same year defending the British position (and Wesley's support for it) against the attacks of Caleb Evans; Fletcher draws upon 'reason, scripture, and the constitution' to argue that indirect representation is a valid basis for taxation and that a lasting… Read More
