Costain's 1945 novel, about a Saxon youth who runs away from England during the Crusades. Somehow he and a friend make it to China, where they get involved with the court of Kubla Kahn. 8 x 10 inches. Light rubbing and faint creasing overall, else Near Fine.

North Hollywood: Republic Pictures, 1948. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1948 film. Released the same year as Laurence Olivier's much lauded "Hamlet," Welles' "Macbeth," shot on a modest budget and very tight production schedule, was largely overshadowed by Olivier's film and poorly received upon release. Republic Pictures, after the film tested unfavorably in a few cities, had Welles remove two reels and re-record the film, replacing the Scottish burrs Welles requested with the actors' natural voices. The original uncut version, with Scottish burr, were restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Folger Shakespeare Library in 1980, and has since be reconsidered as one of Welles' most significant films. A spoof of Bond films of the 1960s, made when producer Charles K. Feldman, who had the rights to Fleming's work, could not come to an agreement to create a film parallel to those produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman at Eon Productions. 10 x 8 inches. The script's development history began in the US with Vanguard Films and this draft by Dinelli, and was ultimately produced by Republic Pictures in conjunction with Herbert Wilcox Productions in the UK. Script credit was ultimately given to Pamela Bower. Based on the 1913 novel by E. C. Bentley. A reporter is assigned to cover the case of an international businessman in town who was found dead. He poses as a member of the family to gain access to the businessman's house and information from the lead detective on the case who suspects the death was a suicide. Set in Hampshire, England. Los Angeles: American Film Institute [AFI], 1972. Two vintage studio still photographs, one borderless with a bottom margin, and one with a wide bottom margin, of Peter Bogdanovich and John Ford, from the 1971 film. One with a mimeo snipe on verso, for the 9th New York Film Festival, the film's US premiere. Bogdanovich's documentary on the life and films of he seminal director, interviewing the notoriously obstinate man himself, as well as some of his most famous actors, notably Henry Fonda, James Stewart, and John Wayne. Affording the rights to the clips, however, exhausted the film's AFI funding, resulting in the film being rarely shown, and then only in non-profit venues. In 2006 Bogdanovich, having been dissatisfied with the initial version, re-edited and included additional interviews with actors and directors, including Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Walter Hill. 8 x 10 inches. Welles promised to write, produce, and direct a film for Columbia Pictures president Harry Cohn in exchange for an emergency $55,000 to help finance costuming for his 1946 Broadway musical "Around the World." The resultant film, based on Raymond Sherwood King's 1938 novel "If I Die Before I Wake," courted controversy, not least due to Welles' decision to have Hayes cut and bleach her iconic red hair for her performance. Germany: Peter-Presse / Atlas Films, 1966. Original German A1 poster for a 1966 German re-release of the 1942 US film. Orson Welles' followup to "Citizen Kane" (1941) was utterly different from Kane in style and texture, but just as brilliant in its own way. Writer-director Welles does not appear on camera, but his voiceover narration superbly sets the stage for the movie's action, which fades in valentine fashion on Amberson Mansion, the most ostentatious dwelling in all of turn-of-century Indianapolis. Despite the legendarily unsolvable problem of film editor Robert Wise being instructed by the studio-outside Welles' knowledge-to edit away nearly an hour of the film's length, it remains a masterpiece of storytelling, bringing Tarkington's Pulitzer winning novel to life in high style.
