Martinek, USNR a veteran of World War I Naval intelligence, after Admiral Wat T. Cluverius complained to him about the difficulties of recruiting in the Midwest. Ruminating on the challenge, Martinek decided that a comic strip that focused on Naval tradition and courage would educate and fascinate America’s youth. He had previously used the character Don Winslow in some novels he wrote, so he had the main concept readymade. Colonel Frank Knox, later Secretary of the Navy helped sell the idea to the Bell Syndicate.

The DJ has attractive front cover though there is some toning and spotting present. The reason for the lower condition grade is because there is edge bumps/chips/small tears. Brown cloth boards underneath show only very light spotting and handling wear. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting etc. Pages are darkened due to age and the poor quality of paper used by the publisher. The title page states this is the Authorized Edition.

Blue boards lettered in yellow and with a design stamped in blind to the front board, top edge stained yellow as issued, 214 pages, illustrated with a frontispiece, pictorial endpapers, 1 page of ads at the rear. Fair to Good at best copy [spine cocked with some toning plus a 1/2" bleached area to the upper portion, lightly bumped and worn, toned tape residue to the front endpaper; but the story text is tight and clean and the paper is only just beginning to tan.
