Description:
Boston: Oliver Ditson & Co, 1862. Softcover. Good. First edition. Folio. 5pp. Wrappers. Front wrapper detached but present, notched along the spine from once being bound within an album, a small tear to the bottom of the front wrapper, offsetting and foxing throughout, a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano, with a chorus arranged for four voices. Plate number 21443. A song written in dialect about African Americans acquiring their long deserved freedom, with the second verse explaining how they would own the land and tools, raise and sell the animals, but that a child would never be sold. A heartbreaking plea for the freedom of African Americans published in the midst of the American Civil War; the words are taken from Whittier's poem, "Song of the Negro Boatmen" first published in the February 1962 issue of *The Atlantic Monthly*. *OCLC* locates seven holdings and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade.
