A song written in dialect about African Americans acquiring their long deserved freedom, with the second verse explaining how they would own the land and tools, raise and sell the animals, but that a child would never be sold. A heartbreaking plea for the freedom of African Americans published in the midst of the American Civil War; the words are taken from Whittier's poem, "Song of the Negro Boatmen" first published in the February 1962 issue of *The Atlantic Monthly*. *OCLC* locates seven holdings and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade.
