Colonel Richard Irving Dodge (1827-1895) was a colonel in the United States Army and aid-de-camp to General Sherman during 1881-82, and later authored numerous books about his experiences in the American West.

Splits in the lining pages in the hinges have been archivally reinforced with japanese paper. Cloth with shallow fray and loss at spine ends; corner bumped and rubbed through at tips. A few signatures starting slightly at the front edge. Several pages, including the title page and one of the 6 tissue guarded chromo-litho plates have short edge tears which we have mended with archival paper tape. Presumed second edition (copyright date is 1882), very good in the original brown cloth with gilt lettering and designs. Front hinge is tape repaired, but still holding together. Two different owner names on second (blank) front endpaper. Spine is somewhat sun faded but still legible, with wear at the top edge and a small tear at the top of the rear gutter. Complete with no marks in the text; all plates are present (including 6 chromoliograph color plates with tissue guard). One page (629/630) is missing about one quarter of the text. Introduction by William T. Sherman, who Dodge served under.
