Lummis has written several books on the Southwest as he traveled and studied the land and its people. Bound in rust pictorial gilt cloth lettered and decorated in black dark brown and gilt, minor rubbing to corners and spine ends, previous owner's name on front pastedown. A very nice copy.

Sante Fe: E. Brevooort, 1874. First Edition. Octavo. 176 pages. Brevoort was a speculator who in the era wrote one of the earliest locally printed histories and the definitive work of its period, based on information furnished by early settlers and the author's own residence of 24 years. He already had substantial interest in land grants he had purchased so he was the best known of the promoters of the state. His friend William F.N. Amy had written a smaller book in 1873 but allowed his name as a reference. He writes while many disparage the land for farming, the Navajo, Zuni, Paiute and even the Apache cultivate the soil. What makes this item unique is both the two book plates one of which he signs: "the author" and a previously unknown broadside entitled: TO MEN OF MONEY! Awa Tsireh was a famous artist of San Ildefonso and has her illustrations in several well known museums and galleries. The Indian stories are usually told in the Winter's evening. Stories are not told during Spring or Summer as everyone is busy tending crops and other jobs that need tending. The stories within are each headed with a short biography of the storyteller who told that story. A very nice copy bound in beige cloth lettered and decorated in brown and black, spine brown and black, pictorial endpapers, small spot near foot appears to have had a sticker of some sort and there is a shadow, light finger soiling, off-setting from plate on title page. A very nice clean copy without names or bookplates.
