Prior ownership bookplate and ink stamp of small town and schools to the front pastedown but no labels, attachments or stamps to any area of the book. Mild toning and superficial soiling to endpages. Quite scarce with no copies located in collections searched by Worldcat. This copy with general wear; shallow fray to cloth at spine ends and light rub through to cloth at corners. Decorative title designs rubbed and moderately dulled. Hinges tender but sound; mild internal split between the title page and flyleaf. Page 15/16 loose from binding and laid in. Occasional mild toning and spotting to page stock. Rarely seen. G to G+ only .

This copy much worn with chipping and age toning to covers; most of the printed paper covering the spine is chipped away and there are large chips missing from the front and bottom edges of the rear cover. Printed on lower grade paper with expected general toning, though the two short novels are complete and soundly bound. Rebound in 1/2 green morocco with floral patterned paper covered boards and endleaves. A distinctively, and rather dissociative (for the title) Jazz Age choice of font and decorations in gilt to the compartments at spine. A manuscript note laid in at front appears to be a bookseller catalogue note, as it does not appear to be in Smith's hand. HC 1st edition of this, one of the earliest American titles on sporting dogs. In original trade cloth binding embossed in blond to boards and with gilt title vignette to spine. Cloth pulled and frayed at spine ends; corners bumbed with light rub through to cloth. Binding shaken; cords largely broken at front. Engraved half-title nearly loose and several signatures starting. Included blanks at front and rear, half-title and engraved title page, frontis and 3 additional plates. Lacking the Terrier plate. Pastedowns scarred with abrasion and partial loss. Rebacking would do wonders. Expected scattered spotting and foxing. Lacking only 1 plate, otherwise complete. Good only at best .

HC 1st American edition of the work which originally appeared in London, 1860. Illustrated with 4 hand colored woodcuts of polar adventures. Bound in original textured brown cloth with originaql endpages intact and complete. Cloth binding is shabby and worn with damp mottling to rear board; if there were gilt designs at spine they have been completely effaced. Top front corners heavily rubbed with boards rounded; cloth chipped away at spine ends. Several prior owner names penciled to front. Binding generally sound and contents clean but with a few superficial gaps between signatures and a bit shaken in the spine. Complete contents near VG but in quite shabby binding, so Good only overall at best .

Vol II has a longer L shaped tear to the cloth of the spine, down the front joint and across the spine. We have mended the tear with archival PVA. Bit of mild bublling to the cloth top edge of Vol II and a few short bits of fray to the cloth over the spine of Vol I. Contents clean and neat with just superficial toning to page stock. VG- .
