Rainbow-colored ribbon attached. 348 pp. Wear to edges. Strip of leather chipped off at header of spine, and larger strip, about 1"x1/2", leather chipped off at footer. Front hinge split, leaving front board attached only at top hub. Minor toning to page edges. Interior excellent. This is an early printing of French novelist and critic Bourget's third book. This novel has never been translated into English.

More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Hinges are moderately cracked causing boards to be loose; cracking much lighter to gutters. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Book has a slight forward lean.

Paris: Alphonse Lemerre, 1887. Leather. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A leather bound copy of this novel by Paul Bourget Paul Charles Joseph Bourget (1852-1935) French novelist and critic. He was admitted to the Académie française in 1894, and in 1895 was promoted to be an officer of the Légion d'honneur, having received the decoration of the order ten years before. He was very popular during his time and has had a lasting effect on French literature. One of his poems was the inspiration for a song by Debussy titled Beau Soir. These volumes contain the bookplate of Elizabeth Sherman Cameron (1860-1944), who was a significant member of Washington society in the 1870's, and friends with Edith Wharton. She married Senator James Donald Cameron in 1878 but later became estranged from her husband and moved to Europe with their daughter, Martha.
