The 120 full-page photographs in this book depict people at country fairs, rodeos, mining camps, drilling sites, and even a slaughterhouse - men and women of the American West who work at hard, everyday jobs. Richard Avedon introduces the volume with an essay on his working method and portrait philosophy, and Laura Wilson, who accompanied Avedon and his team, provides a journal of their travels, between 1979 and 1984. 11x17 inches, soft cover in nice condition..

Against a stark white background, he photographed people living in rural areas and fresh from hard, industrial work. The result is a powerful portrait of the unromantic West-slaughterhouse workers, hardscrabble farmers, migrant farmworkers, coal miners, and even prisoners. With an essay by Laura Wilson at the back of the book. Not paginated, but approximately 180 pages plus one fold-out image. 11-1/4 by 14-1/4 inches. This is the hardcover issue; the book was issued simultaneously in paperback with a different cover design. First edition (first printing with no additional printings noted). A near fine, slightly spine-faded copy in a fine, unprinted acetate dust jacket.

Muhlert was the director at the time of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, TX, and in the dedicatory note from Avedon regarding her predecessor (Mitchell Wilder), although he does not thank her by name, it was under her guidance that this project, started by Avedon in the late 1970s with Wilder's assistance, became realized. The museum was its launching point in inspiration as well as the first stop on its exhibition cycle. Important association copy -- inscribed "with affection" by Avedon.
