The book is unmarked throughout but text block has slight hinge issues stating at back and tissue guard at front. The spine is still firm and boards rigid. Tips still pointed though tips and cover are worn and rubbed though still vibrant brown with nice picture of a Stanley and Livingston and others on front cover. Spine ends slightly pushed and frayed. Black and white drawings of natives and scenery. Index, appendices, glossary. No jacket. Looks intrepid! Shipping box is suitable for wrapping. .

With maps and illustrations after drawings by the author. "Property of The Boys' Club" is rubber-stamped on the front and rear pastedowns. There is a number sticker on the spine. The spine is very slightly sunned. The front hinge is starting to crack. Otherwise unmarked and in an otherwise tight binding.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Boards are worn, rubbed and frayed. Soil and fading. Fore edge and endpaper soil and foxing. Water mark to lower corner margins throughout, text unaffected. Occasional foxing and soil to text. Maps are all present with some wear, soil and foxing, frontis map has some tearing at creases, map of Lake Tangika is mostly separated at creases, but all parts are present. Binding is tight. Always carefully wrapped and shipped in cardboard boxes to protect your purchase.

Lettered in gilt. lxxix, 552. A fine and very bright copy, virtually without fault. VERY SCARCE. The Centenary edition was published on the 100th anniversary of Livingstone’s birth. HOW I FOUND LIVINGSTON was Stanley's first book, and the book which secured his reputation. The quest to recover David Livingstone is one of the most famous travel adventures, and manhunts, in history. The oft quoted line “Dr. Livingstone I presume” is from this journey and that scene is recreated in the engraved plate on page 331 of this book.

Extensively illustrated throughout with 28 full page illustrations and additional in-text illustrations. First American edition published the same year as the first British.

Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), the explorer and journalist, was commissioned by his employer, the New York Herald to mount an expedition to Africa to find the missing Scottish missionary David Livingstone. Stanley found Livingstone in November 1871, where he famously said (or perhaps not),"Dr. Livingstone, I presume." The trip brought Stanley fame and fortune. His first account of the expedition was published in July 1872. The recipient, John Goodenow (1833-1906) was from a prominent legal and political family in Maine. David Livingstone's is SIGNED without inscrition and Stanley's is inscribed "Yours Faithfully" and SIGNED in full "Henry M. Stanley; it is mounted to a heavier grade paper backing. Both are in very good condition with light toning. The gilt stamped pictorial cloth is edge rubbed with spine ends and joints frayed and corners exposed. The gilt is lightly dulled, page edges sporadically spotted. The front hinge is starting, the rear hinge is fine. There are four folding maps present; the second and third are in excellent condition, the "frontis" has two 3/4" closed tears, one at each end close to the gutter attachment and the one facing pg. 474 also has folding tears near the gutter.
