Description:
Oxford: J. Parker & T. Payne & H. Foss & G. B. Whittaker, 1826. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. A two volume set of Sophocles' tragic dramas, with fragments of lost plays to volume two. Volume one has been hollowed out to make a book-safe. Two volumes. Latin language. The pages of volume one have been excised to make a book-safe, or hollowed-out book in an attempt to conceal objects within. Books have often been used as a concealment device because they are readily available and inconspicuous in most settings, the safe can be clear to recognise for the owner but don't stand out to a thief. Many examples are found in television and film. Volume two contains some of the Sophocles' seven tragic plays, with sections in the original ancient Greek and notes in Latin. The plays included are Philoctetes and Electra, with fragments of the lost plays to the rear. Written by Sophocles, an ancient Greek tragedian. In the original full calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing and… Read More

Lutetiae [= Paris]: Michaelem Vascosanum [= Michael Vascosanus], 1557. Early edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [2], 1-324, [1] pp. Full eighteenth-century calf with the spine in six compartments, gold lettering and decorations on the spine, gilt tooling to the boards' edges; textblock decoratively spotted. Translated into Latin from the Greek by Johannes Lalamantius. Adams 1452. Oxford Classical Dictionary 1422-1425. Sophocles was one of the three principal Greek tragedians of Classical Athens. He wrote more than 120 plays and won a minimum of 20 competitions, with 18 victories at the City Dionysia. Just seven of his plays survive, two of which earned him victories in dramatic competitions (Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus). Sophocles plays touch on timeless motifs like humanity's blindness to truth, tyrannical government, individual rebellion, and tribalism. Antigone is still widely performed today, with its themes of individual rights versus tyranny and choosing one's family over the law still… Read More

Description:
Paris: Henri Estienne, Paulus Stephanus, 1557. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Three volumes bound as five in a very idiosyncratic manner. the 33 plays (7 of Aeschylus from the 1557 edition, 7 by Sophocles from the 1603 and 19 by Euripides from 1602) are broken up and bound in volumes 2-5 with interleaved blanks. There is no obvious order to the plays, with the three authors intermingled in each volume. The first volume is the title pages, prefatory material and notes. All three books collate as complete, early notes and underlining through all the volumes and additions in manuscript in a few spots where the plays broke up inconveniently, modest foxing, generally quite clean. Hinges cracked, one cord loose on volume 1, modest wear to bindings, lacking one lettering piece, but a lovely set overall with fine gold tooling, marbled endpapers. Provenance: Camden bookplates inside each volume. Brunet A78, Adams A265, Graesse I 29. Euripides: 1 [[12], 747, [1], 846 [i.e.… Read More
