London: Tonson, Woodfall, Rivington, Longman etc, 1765. Two volumes - I and VI from what must have been a beautiful set of Samuel Johnson's 1765 edition of Shakespeare's plays. Contemporary full speckled calf with black and red spine labels. Wear to extremities. Hinge with lower cover of Vol I very tender; first flyleaf of Vol VI beginning to detach. The frontispiece image of Shakespeare appears correctly opposite the general title page of Vol I; overleaf in an 18th century hand is written 'D Garrick Esq.r' below the mark where an image of Garrick was previously mounted. Vol I contains, multiple introductions by Johnson, Pope, Theobald etc together with a Life of Shakespeare and The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Two Gentlemen, Measure for Mercant and The Merchant of Venice; Vol VI has Lear, Timon, Titus, Macbeth and Coriolanus. Twelve volume Shakespeare edition owned for 250 years by the Little family of Newbold Pacey Hall just a few miles from Shakespeare's birthplace at Stratford upon Avon. Ten volumes of plays with the two volume supplement containing commentary, Sonnets and poems. Attractively bound in contemporary calf with elaborate gilt decoration to spines, spine labels and Roman volume number labels with inlay, most of the labels chipped and several missing. Generally very clean copies with about half a dozen additional engravings tipped in, taken from Bell's Shakespeare edition, dated to 1770s Volume I, 'On Shakespeare's Monument' eighteenth centry poem by Elizabeth Tollet, cut from a journal and laid down on second flyleaf by an early reader.
