A journalist and a well-known character in his day, Pierce Egan started a craze with Life in London. It suited the taste of the time, when a "fast' life had become a sophisticated and conscious aim. To the modern reader, Real Life in London acts as a guide to the social history of early nineteenth century London. Old dampstain and shelfwear, some scuffing to covers. Occassinal offsetting and foxing. Overall in very good condition.

Known primarily for his extensive account of boxing, Pierce Egan was a well-known and popular British sportswriter. His popularity as an author spurred him to create a recurring monthly journal entitled "Life in London" in which he employed George Cruikshank to illustrate each edition. It is filled with stories, articles, and accounts of various topics including boxing, parties, and adventure stories while using his own characters Tom & Jerry which inspired the 'Tom & Jerry' cartoon characters.

Bound in contemporary tree calf by by Riviere, re-backed in later leather with the original gilt decorated spine with raised bands and the original red leather title label. The top edge is gilt. There is minor wear to the edges and corners of the original covers. Abbey 280. A beautiful copy overall -- clean and fresh within, and a gorgeous binding, with a few very minor rub spots, and one tiny abrasion on the rear cover of the second volume.
