Description:
The Burton Club Denver Colorado nd (between 1903-mid 1920s). 24.0 x 16.0cms, 308pp, frontespiece illusts, very good hardback with decorated boards, including Islamic motifs. This book was the second unabridged and unexpurgated English translation of the famous Tales. John Payne's translation bore the title The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night (1882-1884, 9 volumes) and Burton's version was published soon after. Burton had collaborated with Payne for ten years and Thomas Wright claimed that Burton had plagarised Paine's work (1906). More recent scholars have disputed this claim. Owing to the original text's sexual imagery and to the strict Victorian laws on obscene material, Burton printed his translation for the Kama Shastra Society's private subscribers. In America, the Carson-Harper Company, Denver, Colorado, published a 16 volume edition for private subscribers only (1900-1901). This Burton Society edition had 100 Stanley L Wood illustrations and was the first reprint of the original… Read More
