Parma: Co'tipi Bodoniani, 1801. 12mo, pp. [ii], viii, [ii], 86. Half-title bound after prefatory verses. Contemporary tree sheep, boards bordered with a gilt rope roll inside a single rule, flat spine divided by gilt rules, pink leather label, other compartments alternating styles of sunburst tools gilt, blue endpapers sprinkled in black, edges yellow sprinkled in red. A touch of minor spotting. Extremities a little rubbed. A pretty copy of the Eclogues of Virgil translated into Italian by Prospero Manara (1714-1800), first published 1764 to general acclaim; it was further reprinted until the 1830s. This particular edition is produced with the typical care and elegance of the Bodoni press, which also published Manara's translation of the Georgics in the same year. Brooks 808.

Description:
London: S.W. Sustenance, 1831. 3 vols., 12mo, pp. 360; 359, [1]; 358 + engraved frontispiece and title-page in each vol. Contemporary sprinkled paper boards by S.P.A. Koumans of Delft (with labels on front pastedowns), red roan labels to spines. Title-pages and frontispieces rather foxed, some spotting elsewhere. Joints, spine ends and labels rubbed. Large pink ownership stamp of W.H.L. Janssen van Raay (of Delft) to title-pages. One of a string of popular works compiling quotations, adages, etc, in imitation of Charles Colton’s ‘Lacon’, 1820. This more substantial collection was first published 1827, and works with similar titles (not counting multiple editions of the same title) appeared every decade for the rest of the century. The fashion for such compilations clearly spread across Europe, since this copy was first bound and housed in a collection in Delft.

Description:
London: J. T. Hayes, 1855. 8vo, pp. 16. Extracted from a volume. Title-page a little worn to top edge. A few marginal pencil marks. An unrecorded pamphlet seeking to rehabilitate the reputation of the late Tsar Nicholas I and in doing so lessen support for the Crimean War. The preface, signed ‘A.S.G.’, claims the pamphlet was ‘originally written in the Russian language, translated from it into the German, and again translated into English by a lady, for private circulation.’ While this circuitous origin is possible, it seems more likely that this was, along with its anonymous publication, a way of obfuscating the text’s origin: the preface’s date of 8th November 1855 places it near the end of the Royal Navy’s campaign in the Sea of Azov, and its sympathetic portrayal of a military leader of an enemy combatant country may have been seen as seditious. The writer of the preface seems alive to this possibility when they refer to the… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers, 1836. 8vo, pp. vii, [i], 72 + frontispiece and 4 plates, all with onlaid coloured triangles. Original green textured cloth, printed paper label to front board. Some of the coloured triangles partly oxidised. Cloth somewhat faded and rubbed, label marked. Gift inscription to flyleaf: ‘Alexander Lauder from Mr Patrik, Dec. 1927’. The chief work of David Ramsay Hay (1798-1866), whose artistic leanings were turned towards house-painting by the advice of Sir Walter Scott, for whom he did much work at Abbotsford. He developed his own unique theory of colour harmony, outlined in this work with demonstrations and arguments from (pseudo-)science, and it proved popular and influential: the first edition of 1818 was followed by five more, each expanded and edited.

London: Printed for James Cawthorn, 1814. FIRST BRITISH EDITION, 8vo, pp. xvi, 222. 19th-century half green calf, green pebbled boards, spine divided by raised bands between double blind rules, red morocco label, top edge gilt. Some spotting to endpapers, spine slightly sunned, a little rubbed to extremities. Binder’s ticket of James H. Jackson, manufacturing stationer of Perth, to pastedown. Despite the title-page’s claims this is the first British edition of an American parody of Scott’s Lay of The Last Minstrel, satirising British naval conduct in the war of 1812, first published in America in 1813. Scott called it ‘a piece of tolerably dull Trans-Atlantic wit’ but regarded it ‘the highest compliment I ever received, since it blends me with the Naval reputation of my country’ (Todd & Bowden).
