London: Printed for the Proprietors, under the Direction of John Bell, 1791. 5 vols bound as 1, 12mo, pp. 92, 85-88; 112; 75, [1]; 106, [2]; 84 + frontispiece for each work. Near-contemporary calf, edges sprinkled in red. Some light spotting. Rubbed, particularly to spine, front joint cracking at foot. Ownership inscription of Mrs James Brown to pastedown, title list to flyleaf in same hand. A collection of five plays, each of which was issued separately, and also sold as part of Bell’s British Theatre. Aaron Hill’s Alzira is based upon Alzire by Voltaire. Established in 1957, McNaughtan's Bookshop is the oldest surviving secondhand and antiquarian bookshop in Scotland. Located in the basement of a listed 1820s tenement building at the top of Edinburgh's Leith Walk, we are the only open shop in Edinburgh holding membership of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association.
