About This Item
George Routledge & Sons. Very Good-. 1881. Hardcover. 190 p. 17 x 11 cm. Dated 1881, and states "Second Edition" on the title page. Blue, cloth-covered boards, with spine label title paste-down. Wear to the corners and spine ends. Less so to the edges. Some rippling to the cloth. Spine label has a bit of paper loss. The rear hinge is partially starting to crack. Discolouration to the front endpapers, caused by something that was stuck to it, of which there is some remains (possibly an envelope). Some foxing to most pages, and a couple of pages have dog-eared corners. Includes a nine page introduction to the American edition by Harris. An early British edition of the classic American story of Uncle Remus - his plantation legends and his songs and sayings. Possibly a cheap edition, because it lacks the illustrations of other Routledge editions around this date. Publisher's addresses are given as: Broadway, Ludgate Hill, London; and 9 Lafayette Place, New York. .
Synopsis
The dialect, lore, and flavor of black life in the nineteenth-century South is portrayed as it appeared to Georgia-born Joel Chandler Harris in Uncle Remus’s "Legends of the Old Plantation."
