About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1956. An interesting variant that appears to be unread. Very Near Fine condition in a Very Good dust jacket. The jacket is only very lightly rubbed with mild sunning to red and blue parts on the spine. NO chips, tears, or creases. Square and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. NOT a library discard. Pages are crisp, clean and unmarked -- apparently never read. NOT the true first although "First printing September 1956" is so stated on the copyright page, with NO indication of any subsequent printings. There is NO book club indication such as a mark or embossed dot, star or "A" at the bottom corner of the rear board. However there is NO jacket price and NO date on the title page. Top edge tinted blue [NOT black], as issued. Bound in the original blue patterned (simulated marbling) boards with a bright white stamped blue cloth spine. Complete with dust jacket. NOTE: Ahearn COLLECTED BOOKS (2002) says there are at least 3 variants that state "First American Edition." This copy states "First printing September 1956" with NO mention of "American." The true first was British, published in London the same year.. First printing (so stated). Hardcover. Very Near Fine condition/Very Good dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. 288pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
