About This Item
London: Vizetelly & Co., 1886. First English Edition. Original publisher’s decorated cloth. A little foxing; a couple of pages roughly opened; one leaf of text torn across, without loss; very slightly cocked; overall, an unusually attractive and fresh copy. Translated by Karl Marx’s daughter, Eleanor Marx-Aveling, who contributed a long and perceptive introduction to the novel.
Synopsis
Madame Bovary is Gustave Flaubert's first novel and considered his masterpiece. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns.
