About This Item

New Haven, CT: Yale University Press. Good with no dust jacket; Boards sunned, usual library stamps and . markings, part of jacket flap glued to front free endpaper.. 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Red cloth binding. Index, notes, list of illustrations. Thomas J. Wise was a noted literary forger and was unmasked by John A. Carter of ABC for Book Collectors fame a few years before Wise's demise. He had been a member of the Browning Society which gave him access to the author and soon became a friend and according to Hood's introduction in this volume a "central treasurer of Browning lore, the untiring helper of Browning biographers and scholars. The factual resources of his growing store of letters from the poet to various correspondents have never been exhausted" (p. xiii). One can understand that forging these kinds of literary documents would make for a seemingly unending supply. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 389 pages .
