About This Item

Georgetown, KY: Ann Bevins (Stated 4th Printing, 2005). Like new hardcover and dust jacket, 319 pages. The only indications that this is the 4th Printing are on the front of the dust jacket and a 2005 quote from the author on the back of the dust jacket. The publication page of the book shows 3rd Printing, Revised 1989. ABOUT THE BOOK: A HISTORY OF SCOTT COUNTY AS TOLD BY SELECTED BUILDINGS was first published in 1981. At least thirty percent of the buildings depicted as standing at that time, by the time of this fourth printing in 2005, have disappeared from the landscape, some by fire, and others by neglect and outright demolition. Many are endangered, and it will take a near-miracle, launched and completed by caring and sensitive owners to restore to these near-misses the appearance and character that original and historic-eras owners intended. Historian and author Ann Bolton Bevins believes that old houses, commercial and industrial buildings, structures, and sites have a way of communicating to us--if we give them that chance. The National Register process of understanding properties within the seven criteria of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association is a solid beginning to understanding and interpreting them. In her studies of historic properties, Bevins has pursued the stories of previous owners; architects, designers, builders, other occupants, and uses. Public records including deeds, wills, order books, lawsuits, census and state auditors' reports, along with private journals, letters, newspaper accounts, and published sources have contributed in a major way to this process.
