L'Affaire Hardback - 2003

by Johnson, Diane

Diane Johnson, two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and three-time finalist for the National Book Award, delivers an enchanting and wickedly funny novel about an American abroad and the delicate questions of love, death and money.

When Amy Hawkins, a young dot-com executive from California who has made her fortune at the top of NASDAQ, overhears a pair of elderly and thus much wiser socialites decry the new generation for their incompetence in all things worldly, she sets off for Europe to find culture, her roots, and maybe a cause to devote her considerable fortune to. Amy starts her quest at one of the finest small hotels in the French Alps-a hotel noted for skiing and its famous cooking lessons-in the town of Valmeri.

A few days into her trip, Amy is nearly swept away by an avalanche (started, some say, by low-American warplanes). Two of the hotel's guests, esteemed English publisher Adrian Venn and his much younger American wife, Kerry, were not as fortunate as Amy. Both lie comatose in a nearby hospital. Learning that French and English law dictate a very different division of money depending on where Adrian dies, Adrian's children-young, old, legitimate, and illegitimate-assemble in Valmeri to protect their interests should he not pull through.

Amy, already suspect as an American, finds that her nationality freezes the social climate as she steps in to assist the family. In her innocence, Amy sets in motion a series of events in France and England that spotlight ancient national differences, customs, and laws. Add one or two small affairs that may topple carefully balanced alliances, and soon it is as the French say, a situation.

Hailed as witty, delicious, nuanced and fresh by book critics across the country, Diane Johnson has composed her most amusing and insightful character to date in young Amy Hawkins. A contemporary masterpiece sure to entertain, L'Affaie is a perfectly drawn comedy of manners abroad.

Summary

A wickedly funny and observant novel about the delicate questions of love, death and money.Amy Hawkins, Californian millionairess, is travelling in Europe, to find her culture, her roots and a cause to which she might devote her considerable fortune. She lands at one of the finest small hotels in the French Alps – a hotel noted for skiing and its famous cooking lessons – and soon finds that Americans are not the flavour of the month in France.A few days into her trip, she narrowly survives an avalanche. Two of the hotel's other guests, English publisher Adrian Venn and his much younger wife Kerry, are not as fortunate and both lie comatose in a nearby hospital. Amy steps in as Adrian's children – young and old, legitimate and illegitimate - assemble in Valmeri to protect their interests should he not pull through, and in her innocence sets in motion a series of events in France and England that threaten to topple carefully built family alliances once and for all.Add one or two small affaires and soon it is, as the French would say, a situation.

From the publisher

Amy Hawkins, a young dot-com executive from California who has made her fortune at the top of NASDAQ sets off for Europe to find culture, her roots, and maybe a cause to devote her considerable fortune to. Amy starts her quest at one of the finest small hotels in the French Alps--a hotel noted for skiing and its famous cooking lessons--in the town of Valmeri, amid art assortment of Eurotrash aristocrats and ski enthusiasts. She has no plans to fall in love. On the first afternoon, she is nearly swept away by an avalanche (started, some say, by low-flying American warplanes). Two of the hotel's guests, esteemed English publisher Adrian Venn and his much younger American wife, Kerry, weren't as fortunate as Amy. Both lie comatose in a nearby hospital. When Adrian's children--young, old, legitimate, illegitimate--assemble in Valmeri to protect their interests should he not pull through. Amy finds the Hotel Croix St. Bernard a more difficult place. Here is British Rupert; his voluptuous sister. Posy; a French daughter, Victoire; her handsome husband; and their little half-brother, Harry, Kerry's eighteen-month-old baby, being cared for by Kerry's fourteen-year-old brother. Kip. Amy, already suspect as an American, finds that her nationality freezes the social climate as she steps in to assist the struggling Kip. She sets in motion a series of events in France and England that spotlight ancient national differences, customs, and laws, all leavened by American attitudes. Add the elements of love, sex, death, travel, and cooking--which bring on an uproar rivaling the avalanche--and "L'Affaire becomes a narrative both unexpected and amusing. With a memorable cast of characters assembled on anunmistakably European stage, Diane Johnson has crafted a penetrating comedy of manners about being American in Europe--and about love.

First line

All of Europe had been fascinated for the past few days by televised images of avalanches descending in the wake of storms on certain ski resorts and pretty villages in the Alps.

Media reviews

Like Jane Austen, Johnson delights in the worldly rituals surrounding courtship and marriage . . . She is a philosopher as much as a novelist." (The New Yorker)Diane Johnson treads--very consciously and cleverly--across the ancient and hallowed turf of the 'international novel.'" (The New York Times Book Review)
