Dombey and Son Paperback - 1964

by Charles Dickens

About this book

Charles Dickens’s story of a powerful man whose callous neglect of his family triggers his professional and personal downfall showcases the author’s gift for vivid characterization and unfailingly realistic description. It follows the narrative of a shipping firm owner, who abandoned his family in favor of fortune after rejecting his daughter’s love in preference of a son. He later reconciles with her and begs forgiveness before his death.

Dombey and Son is a novel by the Victorian author Charles Dickens. It was first published in monthly parts between October 1846 and April 1848 with the full title Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son: Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation. Dickens started writing the book in Lausanne, Switzerland, but traveled extensively during the course of its writing, returning to England to begin another work before completing Dombey and Son.

Summary

Dombey and Son is both a firm and a family and the ambiguous connection between public and private life lies at the heart of Dickens' novel. Paul Dombey is a man who runs his domestic affairs as he runs his business: calculatingly, callously, coldly and commercially. Through his dysfunctional relationships with his son, his two wives, and his neglected daughter Florence, Dickens paints a vivid picture of the limitations of a society dominated by commercial values and the drive for profit andexplores the possibility of moral and emotional redemption through familial love.

From the publisher

Mr. Dombey's idealistic vision of his Dombey and Son shipping firm rests on the shoulders of his delicate son Paul. However, when the firm faces ruin, and Dombey's second marriage ends in disaster, it is his devoted daughter Florence, unloved and neglected, who comes to his aid. This new edition contains Dickens's prefaces, his working plans, and all the original illustrations. The text is that of the definitive Clarendon edition, which is supplemented by a wide-ranging Introduction that highlights Dickens's sensitivity to the problems of his day, including those of family relationships, giving the novel added depth and relevance. The Notes and Bibliography have been substantially revised, extended, and updated.

Cover: Lambert. keywords: Signet Classic Paperback. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Dombey and Son marks the great turning point of Dickens' artistic career. In it, he departs forever from the picaresque world of his earlier novels, in which only individual villainy had marred the landscape of life; for the first time he envisions evil as inherent in the very structure of his society, and gives unified form to this vision in all its scope, depth, and complexity. Set in an England caught in the throes of industrial revolution and commercial expansion, this tale of a proud, ambitious, and morally blind businessman, and of his pernicious effect upon the multitude of lives around him, stands as a memorable indictment of a corrosive economic system, and as a profound plea for human values.
