Description:
Franklin Center: Franklin Library, 1979. Limited edition. Hardcover. vg. Signed. 4to. 238pp. Original gilt stamped full leather cover with gold lettering on spine. Gilt edges. Orange silk moiré insides with matching bound-in ribbon. Protective tissue over author's signature. Translated from German by Daphne Hardy. Illustrated with six black and blue colored full-page plates by George Roth. Very minor wear on spine. Otherwise in near fine condition. Arthur Koestler was a former Communist. The novel is a reflection on the Stalinist purges of the old Bolshevik guard during the 1930s as told from the perspective of the fictional character N. S. Rubashov. Of particular interest is Koestler's exploration of the psychology of the ex-revolutionary to confess to crimes that one did not commit in order to offer oneself as scapegoat for the revolution.

INSCRIBED to the noted film star Richard Arlen and his wife ("Dick and Joby Arlen") and SIGNED by the author on the ffep, additionally DATED in his hand Mar. 24, 1931. The author's only book (at least that we know about), a novel derived from his own experiences as a coal miner in England. As explained in the jacket bio, and further confirmed by the inscription, by the time he wrote this book he had relocated to America, where he worked at a string of jobs including "motion-picture reader [and] ghost-writer (scenarios and several novels)," all before the ripe old age of 33. (He doesn't appear to have ever received any screen credits, but this copy… Read More
