Description:
NY: Harper & Brothers, 1861. Reprint American edition. small 8vo, pp. Light water stain, some very light foxing, some of the cloth on the covers worn off, a good tight copy. This edition was issued without the illustrations and map. "Keppel, a British naval officer who had served in the Opium War, participated in the campaign against the Borneo pirates in 1843-44. During the execution of his orders to protect trade and suppress piracy in the Malacca Straits, he met James Brooke who had received the title of rajah of Sarawak, in perpetuity, from the Sultan of Brunei. The first volume concerns itself with Brooke's exploits in Sarawak from 1838-42, prior to his meeting with Keppel. Brooke attempted to open Borneo for foreign trade and tried to pacify the tribes. As a reward for success in the latter endeavor, he was given his title in 1841. Volume two recounts the military exploits of Brooke, Keppel, and Sir Edward Belcher, who occasionally came to Keppel's aid, gives a geographical overview of Borneo,… Read More

Paris, 1780. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 9" x 12 3/4"<br/> <br/> This map of the East Indies, published in Bonne's 1780 atlas, extends from the Malay Peninsula to the northern coast of Australia, the map shows the islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Celebes, Timor, Mindanao, Maluku, and many islets. Pictorial mountains depict the mountainous terrain of the volcanic islands. An inset in the lower left corner depicts the Maluku islands in greater detail. The map is in excellent condition. Center fold as issued. <br> <Br> Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He served as Hydrographer to France, and during his term, he produced a number of detailed and useful maps, particularly of coastal regions. His work is often devoid of decorative cartouches and compasses roses and marks a turn in European map-making away from decoration toward technical mapping.<br/> <br/>
