Shaw probably refers to Carlotta Lowell Shaw (Shaw Lowell), daughter of reformer Josephine Shaw (herself a sister of Civil War hero Robert Gould Shaw and the first woman to hold public office in New York City) and Civil War Major and fatal casualty Charles Russell Lowell (1835-1864).
