Some toning to endpapers, but generally very clean; binding sound. Woolman (1720-1772) was an American Quaker leader and pioneer abolitionist. His Journal was first published in 1774. According to ANB, "Woolman's ministry had few marks of public success; his role in moving the Quakers away from slaveholding was probably most notable, along with his influence on later abolitionists. The effect of his personal ministry upon countless individuals cannot be measured. His Journal, however, had obvious influence: Henry Crab Robinson called it 'a perfect gem ... in a style of the most exquisite purity and grace' (quoted in J. G. Pages yellowed and moderately foxed. Mouse chewed large portion of first few pages and then less of the next 30 or so pages--affects text on title page and bottom edge of introduction. Does not affect text of Woolman's actual works. Date of 1774 is assumed based on the partial words of the city and printer, which suggest Joseph (Crukshank) in Phila(delphia), which would then be in 1774 and a first edition. Smith II:961 . Poor. A good plus copy in contemporary leather which is rather heavily worn and chipping, excised signature on front free endpaper, staining/browning to some pages, but overall a tight clean copy.. The journals of an early abolitionist, Woolman's journals have been among the only continuously published works in North America since the American Revolution. Hardcover bound in original full brown leather with a red leather label on the spine. Ribbed spine. Front hinge is cracked and holding by one cord at the bottom band. The binding is worn and bumped. The text block is sound. Early owner's signature on the front flyleaf is of Sam'l Titus or Tiles or Jiles. Another similar signature in pencil on the rear flyleaf is dated 1846. The ink signature on the front flyleaf looks much closer to the original publication of the book. The text is toned and shows foxing and has some possible damp spots.
