Col. Charles Stoddart and Capt. Arthur Connolly were executed as British spies by the Emir of Bokhara in 1842. Blackmer sale 1109 (for the New York, 1845 edition): "Wolff brought the first authentic account of the fate of the two officers to England having been commissioned to do so by a committee headed by Captain John Grover: they had been beheaded. Their executioner had been instructed to dispose of Wolff in the same way but he escaped after a series of remarkable adventures.
