Description:
Alfred A. Knopf, London., 1926. First U.K. edition. Octavo. 300 pages. The author was a civil rights activist who led the NAACP from 1929 to 1959 and played a leading role in the Harlem Renaissance. The novel, the author's second, centres on the theme of ''passing'' for white.Small ink spot on front pastedown. Covers slightly bumped at the corners. Spine partially faded. Very good. Loosely inserted are the remains of the dustwrapper: three large pieces retaining most of the design by E. McKnight Kauffer. This U.K. edition is very scarce.

Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 300pp. + ads. Decorated maroon cloth. A few faint soil marks on the cloth, small smudge on front fly, else a very good copy with the text fresh and clean, lacking the dust jacket. White headed the NAACP for a quarter of a century. Warmly inscribed by White to author Theodore Stempfel: "For Theodore Stempfel, With the admiration and affection of his friend. Walter White." With Stempfel's attractive contemporary bookplate. Stempfel translated a number of works on the American "Turnerbund" movement, a gymnastic union with early roots in Germany, that in the 19th Century was a proponent of socialism and the abolition of slavery.
