Composed of letters written by the author to her mother and friends in England, the Backwoods includes much useful and interesting information on home-making under pioneer conditions, pioneer recipes for making maple sugar, vinegar, &c. Mrs. Traill, who emigrated to Canada with her husband, a lieutenant in the 21st Fusiliers, also gives an account of her journey and settlement near Rice Lake, Upper Canada, August 1832-May 1835.
