Some offsetting on a few pages from newspaper clippings and dried flowers, still very good. Nine essays: Natural History of Massachusetts, A Walk to Wachusett, The Landlord, A Winter Walk, The Succession of Forest Trees, Walking, Autumnal Tints, Wild Apples, and Night and Moonlight.

Ticknor and Fields, 1866. Not Stated. Hardcover. Very Good-/No Dust Jacket. 319 pages. 1866. Very faded gold lettering on the spine. Top and tail of the spine are worn, corners are bumped. Cover is faded giving it a dirty look. Small amount of foxing along the foredge. Text is tight with no cracks on the hinges. A very good copy of printing of Thoreau's excursions.

Appears to be professionally rebound with most of the original green cloth and gilt-decorated backstrip preserved. Pencil erasure atop front free endpaper, otherwise quite tight, clean and unmarked with light foxing. A lovely copy..

Very good+ in the publisher's original dark green sawtooth cloth covered boards with copper colored text and decorations and text on the spine, blind embossed borders with a blind stamped wreath on both boards and brown coated end papers. A 12mo of 7 by 4 1/2 inches with the cloth at the head and heel of the spine worn in small spots. An early prior owner's name is in ink on the verso of the first free end page which is duplicated, in pencil, but upside down, on the last fixed end sheet. As is typically seen the frontispiece portrait of Thoreau shows light spots of foxing which have bled through the facing tissue guard to the title page. The contents are otherwise predominantly free of foxing and tanning. 319 pages of text the first 29 pages of which is a biographical sketch of Thoreau written by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. Front and rear cloth boards still have original sheen, spine not as much. Top and bottom of spine and all corners and edges are in excellent condition showing almost no wear. Interior joints are not cracked. Original book sellers label from Salem on free end paper. Previous owner's name with "Christmas 1863" noted. Very light offsetting from frontispiece through tissue guard to title page which is common for this book. Interior is as clean as the day it was printed. Book is tight, square and solid. An important collection of works by Thoreau, which begins with Emerson's "Biographical Sketch," and follows with "Natural History of Massachusetts," "A Winter Walk," "A Walk to Wachusett," "Wild Apples," and several other works. *BAL* 20111, noting this as one of 1558 copies of the first printing.
