Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, although In Memoriam was written to commemorate his best friend Arthur Hallam, a fellow poet and classmate at Trinity College, Cambridge who was engaged to Tennyson's sister but died from a cerebral hæmorrhage. Illustrated with several full-page drawings done in black and white by F.C. Gordon. The American first is not outlined in Wise's bibliography. Tennyson's dramatization of the brutal demise King Henry the VIIIth inflicted on Thomas Becket. The bottom corner of the first illustration clipped, a small dampstain to the bottom corner of the first several leaves.
