Prairie edition of this excellent work written by Roosevelt during his time ranching in the Bad Lands, and later big game hunting in the West during the 1880s.

An uncommon book in the first edition, and especially notable because this copy belonged to The American Museum of Natural History which Roosevelt had a close association with. The Museum's bookplate is on the front pastedown with the deaccession stamp "A.M.N.H. Cancelled" on it. Additionally, tipped in on the title page is a "With the compliments of the author" slip--Roosevelt had the book sent to the museum. Roosevelt's father co-founded the museum and the future President spent time there as a boy, even donating his own early natural history and taxidermy collection to the museum. Quarto, xvi, 472pp. Publisher's original olive buckram, title in gilt on spine, gilt illustration on front cover. Soiling and rubbing to the cloth, as often happens with this edition. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to front pastedown endpaper. Uncut edges, gilt along top edge. Some leaves remain unopened. Light foxing to rear endpapers, occasional foxing in the last two chapters, not affecting the text. Both hinges showing some wear, but text block is solid. Frontispiece and twenty-three illustrated plates by A.B. Frost, Henry Sandham, J. Carter Beard, C. Harry Eaton, and Frederic Remington. Illustrated throughout with drawings and black & white reproductions of paintings, 472 pages. Very good plus copy with front hinge starting, with gilt top edge, at the spine, and the front board, some minor handling, slight darkening to the green cloth boards, and a trace of edgewear without dust jacket. Quarto, original cloth, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front panel. Frontispiece plus twenty-three full page plates by Frederic Remington, A. B. Frost I, James Carter Beard, Henry Sandham, and Charles Henry Eaton. In very good condition with some light toning to the extremities. Scarce and desirable. When his first wife died in 1884, Theodore Roosevelt withdrew to his cattle ranch in western Dakota. There, he wrote Hunting Trips of a Ranchman (1885) and Thomas Hart Benton (1887) and began work on The Winning of the West (1889). He also penned this account of big-game hunting in the United States, with chapters on hunting lore, hunting with hounds, hunting the grizzly, and hunting from the ranch.
