The principal purposes of this publication are to make available to a wider public that information collected by Plot regarding the Staffordshire Landed Gentry, particularly their seats and their coats of arms, and to identify the individual head of each family generally only identified by surname by Plot. In addition an attempt has been made to identify the family seats in the assessments for the 1666 hearth tax. A short introduction regarding Plot, his collaborators, and his map and book is followed by an alphabetical list of those gentry families appearing on the map. There a brief description of each family is given based on information collected by me for a forthcoming work STAFFORDSHIRE LANDED GENTRY 1086-1680 in which publication fuller references will be found. Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1686 x, 450pp plus index 10. Thirty six of the thirty seven plates, lacks plate 23 and the map. The plates are of high quality suggesting that they are early impressions. Sometime rebacked and the hinges reinforced, the boards though are the original speckled calf. Robert Plot was the first Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum and Profesor of 'Chymistry' at the University of Oxford. He was born in Borden, Kent and is buried there.
