Description:
Edition limited to 200 copies reprinted in facsimile from the New York edition of 1868, of which this is Number 69, octavo, pp. 24. A rude racist lampoon, reprinted from Monaghan's Lincolniana # 907, where it is referred to as "a satire on [his] No. 904," the latter being Elizabeth Keckley's "Behind the Scenes or, Thirty Years a Slave, and Four Years in the White House," published 1868. Reprinted here in a 1945 facsimile with a new two-page Prefatory Note by "A. Lincoln Fann," dated April 1, 1945. Just light wear, as with age and careful handling. Easily very good in the publisher's stapled printed gray wrappers with upper wrap lettering within double ruled border. Ensconced now in a clear protective display sleeve with white cardstock backing board. Scarce in any edition. For the 1868 "Behind the Seams," see Howes O 154; for "Behind the Scenes," see Howes K 21. For this edition, see Hartley, Final Howes, O 157. See also Work, 312, which identifies Elizabeth Keckley as a Negro maid to Mrs. Lincoln.
