Osborn commanded the Pioneer, one of the tenders to Resolute and Assistance of the Franklin search expedition under Captain Horatio T.Austin in 1850-51. His narrative relates the voyage by Baffin Bay, Lancaster Sound, and Barrow Strait, and the party’s wintering at Griffiths Island, and provides details on the West Greenland Esquimaux, ice and weather conditions, sledge journeys, &c. Osborn explored the west coast of Prince of Wales Island in the spring sledge journeys of 1851, and on the return voyage, sailed a considerable distance into Jones Sound. This edition was the first to include an account of the career, last voyage, and fate of Franklin (pp. 259-334). Arctic Bib. 12899. Sabin 57760. Small bookplate upper corner of front paste-down. Housed in a custom Clam-shell box. First Edition, First Printing. 12mo; 183 x 113mm, 7.5 inches tall. 320 pages. 4 color lithographed plates including frontispiece; Folding partly hand colored map, with the appendix. These were left out of the U.S. Edition along with the appendix. Includes Custom Clamshell box.. The expedition proved that Franklin's ships had not been lost in Baffin's Bay. Much of the success of the voyage was due to the steam tenders, which, opened new prospects for Arctic navigation.
