Thomas Newton (1704-1782) was the leading cleric-scholar whose initial editing on Nicholas Rowe's works established him as a thoughtful scholar, this led to patron, Zachary Pearce (a devoted Miltonist), to encourage him to now begin his work on Milton. He began his Variorum edition in 1749. Literary scholars note his work as "scrupulously definitive" (Moyes, 13), DNB. The engraved frontispiece is by George Virtue.
