First American (and the first one-volume) edition. 453 pp. Brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover designed and lettered in black and light brown. The British edition was published by Griffith, Farran in three volumes in 1892. Ink inscription on front fly, dated 1899, trifling wear to cloth at base of spine, a very good, bright copy. ¶ Utopian novel. An Englishman establishes an ideal community built along classical Greek lines on an isolated island in the Aegean Sea. It is later discovered by the outside world.

London: Griffit Farran, 1892. [Strange tale] FIRST EDITION, three volumes complete. Octavo (19 x 13 x 9cm), pp.288; 302; 300. Pagination appears to be correct, with half-titles to vols. 2 and 3 (evidently not called for in first volume). Publisher's light blue cloth blocked in gilt to spine, and titled and trimmed in black to upper, black endpapers. Black titles to upper, gilt titles to spine. Publisher's catalogue to rear. Mudie's Library labels to front covers, some light institutional marks within. Contents generally clean for a lending copy, with no nasty surprises or defects. Expected wear to joints, a little foxing to first and final gatherings, bindings used but solid, some general toning/ageing, gilt dulled. A serviceable example of a particularly scarce triple-decker. An adventure novel from the esteemed mystery writer Fergus Hume. Bleiler; The Checklist of Fantastic Literature [453].

An early and uncommon novel from Hume's prolific career - a Greek Arcadian utopia founded by a wealthy Englishman on an isolated island in the Mediterranean. "...in the hollow of an ancient volcano, an adventurer of advanced ideas has founded a colony of pure-bred Greeks, in the hope that, by isolation and careful selection, they will in future times produce a new art, reviving the pure spirit of ancient Hellas" (The Literary World, August 12, 1892, p.111).
