Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884. First Edition. Fair. 16mo, 319 pages, olive green cloth, lacks the frontispiece, edgeworn This is the first and only novel by Lincoln's private secretary who later became U. S. Secretary of State. This novel is a reaction to the labor agitation of the 1870s and 1880s. This work reflects the viewpoint of the wealthy class in opposition to the laboring class. This was published anonymously - which provoked a heightened interest in it. Critic Virgil I. Parrington judged this novel as the "first girding of the loins of polite letters to put down the menace that looked out from the underworld of the proletariat." This book edition is slightly changed from its magazine appearance in Century Magazine. Others wrote novels immediately in reaction to this work, leaving this as "perhaps the best-known anti-labor novel in the American literary tradition." - Scott Dalrymple.

Description:
American Lit 1000Hay, John, 1838-1905. The Bread-winners: a Social Study. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1884, 319p. Covers somewhat darkened, wear to edges, gift inscription from 1884 on title page, bookplate of collector on front lining paper. Good condition overall. The author was Lincoln's personal secretary and had a distinguished career in the public sector. This, his fourth book, and only novel, was written anonymously. It was first published in installments in The Century Magazine. It takes a decidedly anti-labor stance, apparently a reaction to bitter strikes that had plagued his various business interests in the 1870s and early 1880s. Hay never acknowledged writing the book, but he was widely suspected of being the author. It was only after his death that the true authorship of the book became common knowledge. BAL 7762. Description:
NY: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1884. Perhaps a fist edition. Hardcover. Good Minus. Brown cloth, worn edges, some soiling, spine cocked, two pages with different inscriptions (one dated 1884], unmarked text, some foxing, one signature slightly pulled. A good reading copy. Experienced full-time bookseller since 1994 (selling online since 1998). Image may be added by request. Questions welcome. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877, sometimes referred to as the Great Upheaval, began on July 14 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) cut wages for the third time in a year. This strike finally ended some 69 days later, after it was put down by unofficial militias, the National Guard, and federal troops. Because of economic problems and pressure on wages by the railroads, workers in numerous other cities, in New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland, into Illinois and Missouri, also went out on strike. An estimated 100 people were killed in the unrest across the country.
