Description:
London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1959. First edition, first printing. Published by Rupert Hart-Davis in London, 1959. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper is slightly worn at the corners with some closed tears and creasing. There are also some surface scratches. It has been price clipped. There is a small gift inscription to the front flyleaf, dated in the year of publication. The boards are free from notable wear and the text blocks are, though slightly foxed on the top and side, clean. Overall, this is a very good copy of a fine title. The White Spider dramatically recreates not only the harrowing, successful ascent made by Harrer and his comrades in 1938, but also the previous, tragic attempts at a wall of rock that was recently enshrined in mountaineer Jon Krakauer's first work, Eiger Dreams. For a generation of American climbers, The White Spider has been a formative book.
