Set in 1915 on the treacherous rivers of war-torn Central Africa, the gin-sodden trader Charlie Allnut reluctantly agrees to help prim missionary Rose Sayer travel down river on a hazardous journey to destroy a German gun boat. The novel was first published in 1944, and this later edition (published in 1961) was abridged by G. M. Gore Little.

The tenth in the popular 'Hornblower' series, third chronologically, and one of the three novels covered by the ITV television film series staring Ioan Gruffudd and Robert Lindsay (1998-2003).

With the dust-jacket designed by Ivan Lapper. Internally clean with a little spotting to edges. Head of spine quite heavily bumped. A bright example of the jacket showing some wear to the edges; price-clipped. Very good. Contains the uncompleted last Hornblower novel and two short stories previously unpublished in book form. In 1805 Napoleon prepares to invade England. A desperate hand-to-hand encounter with a French brig gives Hornblower possession of confidential dispatches from Bonaparte - a means of luring the enemy fleet into battle. Asked by the Admiralty to risk a shameful death, he agrees to a dangerous mission which could rank as the greatest defeat of his career - turning spy to light a powder trail to Trafalgar.

'The Gun' is the story of an arduous journey undertaken by Spanish partisans to transport a massive cannon across inhospitable terrain so as to use it to break the siege of Salas. The novel was first published in 1933, and by Penguin in 1939.
