With 44 etchings with mezzotint by H.K.Browne (Phiz) in plates, tissue guarded, including frontispiece and title page. Very Good: bright, clean covers with slight dulling to spine, small cloth tears around spine. Pages are clean and unfoxed, some light foxing to catalogue pages at back, light browning to some tissue guards and plates. Back endpapers have old water stains. A very nice copy with excellent illustrations which has some unopened pages. Pictures available.

Octavo plum gilt roan (one hinge cracked/ head&foot of spine chipped & worn/spine faded/tips worn) vii+[i] +595pp. Inscription on FEP and 1" tear to one plate, with old repair, and faint corner damp marking to a few others never near to printed area. *Unlike Dickens' novels, also Phiz illustated and published by this publisher, this work seems to have been printed on less acid paper as it is not so prone to foxing. Here minor signs of use but minimal foxing/browning.

Marbled boards with brown half-leather and elaborate gilt decoration, decorative tooling in blind, and black leather title window at spine with gilt titles. Small bookbinder's ticket at front paste down - bound by "H. Brown" of Penrith. Rubbed, scuffed and edgeworn, with fraying to papered edges of the boards. One inch split to top of rear outer hinge. Interior hinges just slightly cracked at endsheets; thread binding strong. Interior lightly toned, with heavy foxing through front matter and to last few pages, but with the remainder of the pages only sparsely foxed throughout; else clean, the text remarkably bright for its age. Illustrated throughout with engravings by "Phiz," the pseudonym of artist Hablot Knight Browne, who also illustrated works by Charles Dickens. All plates present.

Publishers brown blind stamped and gilt titled cloth. Spine tips slt chipped with small hinge split. One fascicule loose in binding. Overall very bright. OCLC 12275700 cites a Kirtas reprint edition.
