N.p.: N.p., 1938. Vintage film still photograph from the 1938 film. Based on the 1936 novel "The Wheel Spins" by Ethel Lina White. One of Hitchcock's undisputed classics, a light thriller made (along with "Jamaica Inn" in 1939) at the end of his first British period. Young Iris Henderson (Margaret Lockwood), heading home on a train after a vacation in the Balkans, befriends an old woman, Miss Froy (May Whitty) after Iris gets hit in the head with a flowerpot meant for Miss Froy. On the train, recovering from the blow, Iris falls asleep. When she awakens, Miss Froy has vanished, replaced by someone else in Miss Froy's clothing. Iris talks to the other passengers, a bizarre collection of eccentrics who think Iris is crazy for insisting there ever was a Miss Froy. Finally, Iris finds a young musician, Gilbert (Michael Redgrave), who believes her and the two proceed to search the train for clues. 12 x 9.5 inches. Very Good, with pinholes and creasing to corners and small chip to right corner margin.

Film stars Gregory Peck, Alida Valli, Ann Todd and Charles Laughton. First edition (first printing). Sheets are very good. The top-stapled packet has been folded probably for mailing. There is mild edge wear and small chip missing at corner edge of packet.

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1944. Two vintage studio still photographs from the 1944 film. Nominated for three Academy Awards. Based on John Steinbeck 1943 novella of the same name. Reference numbers are 619-53 (black-and-white, stamped on verso as "KEY SET") and 619-70 (sepia, apparently mounted for internal use). The film follows a group of survivors stranded on a lifeboat following an attack on their merchant ship. Tensions are high as the group negotiates food rations and tries to plot a course to land or rescue. The film is the first in Hitchcock's "limited-setting" fims, followed by "Rope," Dial M for Murder," and "Rear Window." Steinbeck, who wrote the novella for the film, was aggravated by the changes made to his work, specifically to an African American character who he felt had been transformed into a grotesque caricature. Shot on location in Florida and California. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, with toning to one image as well as a manuscript graphite notation to the other.
