This is a first US edition of English Cottages and Farmhouses, written by the famed British country/topography writer Olive Cook. It was photographed by her husband, the British landscape and architecture photographer Edwin Smith.It examines the architectural styles of English country homes and farmhouses, describes their methods of construction, and discusses the place of the farmhouse in English rural life. One reviewer called it a 'masterpiece' and it was a best-seller.208 pages, 177 photographs.There is minor fading to the edges of the cover. There is a family-to-family inscription on the front endpaper, which you can remove if you like. Otherwise, this book does not appear to have been read and is in mint condition.

She dscribes but avoids being flowery. And this book contains that rare combination of harmonious prose and pictures. Evocative and wonderful photographs by the great Edwin Smith, an unpretentious but subtle photographer. Clean and tight book in a clean and intact jacket, which is protected. The first printing - way back in the 80s - meant that the plates were fresh, sharp and original. Subsequent editions become worn, (unlike today's digital files, where the first impression is not necessarily different to the 20th!)
