276 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's green cloth with red labels to cover and spine with gilt lettering to spine and cover in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Translated by Willard R Task. First edition. Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was a Russian poet, playwright, and novelist of the Romantic era who is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. Pushkin was born into Russian nobility in Moscow. His father, Sergey Lvovich Pushkin, belonged to Pushkin noble families. His matrilineal great-grandfather was Abram Petrovich Gannibal. He published his first poem at the age of 15, and was widely recognized by the literary establishment by the time of his graduation from the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. Upon graduation from the Lycee, Pushkin recited his controversial poem "Ode to Liberty", one of several that led to his being exiled by Tsar Alexander the First. While under the strict surveillance of the Tsar's political…

An outstanding Four Volume collection of the unearthly from the pen of a masterHenry James was a notable American author who lived and worked in England for forty years of his life-becoming a nationalised British subject shortly before his death. He is especially remembered for his portrayal of Americans abroad and for the creativity and freedom he displayed within his diverse literary perspectives. His novels remain highly regarded and continually read. Among them are Washington Square, The Bostonians, The Ambassadors and others. In any list of James' notable achievements one title frequently appears first-just as in every list of the most highly regarded supernatural fiction a James work is also certain to appear. That story is, of course, the novella, 'The Turn of the Screw'-a tale of creeping supernatural threat, terror, polluted innocence and inevitable tragedy. It is a deserved classic of supernatural fiction and true to the nature of such things subordinates James's other work in the genre…

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1901. Henry James (1843-1916) wrote this most intriguing of the late novels just prior to "The Wings of the Dove" and "The Ambassadors." This tale of sexual energy baffled many of the earlier critics, but now receives more serious scrutiny. This is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition, which precedes the English version. Not common. Smooth tan cloth binding, ruled and lettered in gilt. Clean text; 319 pages. There is a bookplate on the front paste-down and a signature/stamp opposite the Title Page, else a Fine copy. There is no dustjacket; rather, this copy is protected by a custom slipcase with a leather spine; ruled, with four raised bands, all filled with gilt. The open side of the slipcase and the head and foot of the spine have some rubbing; still, an attractive item. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. 2 volumes. i-[x]-251 pages; 234+[6 ad] pages. Small octavo (7 1/4" x 4 1/2") bound in full leather with black label to spine in gilt lettering. (BAL: 3844) First American edition. Published in London first in the same year.Cooper was one of the most popular 19th-century American authors, and his work was admired greatly throughout the world. While on his death bed, the Austrian composer Franz Schubert wanted most to read more of Cooper's novels. Honoré de Balzac, the French novelist and playwright, admired him greatly. Henry David Thoreau, while attending Harvard, incorporated some of Cooper's style in his own work. Cooper was one of the first major American novelists to include African, African-American and Native American characters in his works. In particular, Native Americans play central roles in his Leatherstocking tales. However, his treatment of this group is complex and highlights the tenuous relationship between frontier settlers and American Indians as exemplified in , depicting a captured…
