At the end of May 1944 the Luftwaffe had a total strength of about 2.8 million men and women, and approximately 4,500 combat aircraft. One year later what planes that were left could not fly due to lack of fuel, and many Luftwaffe personnel had been dragooned into the ground forces to try and stave off the final defeat of Germany. This book is an interesting combination of unit histories, production details, and wider strategic views on how that collapse happened. Contrary to some views that the Allied strategic bombing offensive was a waste of time, the destruction of the German capacity to produce fuel was crucial in eliminating the threat the Luftwaffe posed for the advancing Allied forces. This is a book that is for the true airplane nut, and for those people, it's very interesting reading.191 pages. B&W plates, tables, maps, appendices, bibliography, index.
