Paris: Hotel Plaza-Athenee This is a small hotel accessory that was given to guests of the hotel.. It includes a large pullout map of Paris with points of interest along with a few pages describing the amenities that they can use. There is also a small separate booklet regarding the use of the hotel's safe. On the inside cover is the previous owner's name with the apartment number and date of departure (I think it is 8/1 1957.) The map has one tear along a fold line. . Hard Cover. Florence: Giulio Giannini & Son, 1923. This is a small booklet of 42 pages with some wonderfull illustrations and a great introduction of Sims. In it he mentions that Rossetti stated that Browning had an understanding and knowledge of early italian art that surpassed Ruskin's at the time. There are notes at the end of the poem itself. Browning expresses his love of the Renaissance period. Some have felt that this poem might reflect his own thoughts of his works being lost someday. The Booklet has a yellow and blue starburst decorated cover - with a tear at the top of the booklet. The interior is fine except for natural aging. New York: Borland Press, 1929. This is a limited edition of 2500 copies of which this is no (1). Book has a flexible leather binding with a gilt illustration of a man and a music scale with the words of "should auld acquaintances..." under the notes. Title in gilt - top edges gilt. Overall condition is good with wear to the top and bottom of spine and some wear to the bend in the cover's spine on the front - also some lifting to the cover from the cardboard that can be easily glued. Previous owner's name on inside end page. Many wonderful illustrations. A wonderful addition to a New York collection - and it adds another look at the wonderful New York story. . Limited Edition. 1915. This is a odd book - The book itsel has a suede cover and the words visiting list on the cover. Inside on the front page is written charles albert pope's and theodora Frelinghusen Demarest's wedding gifts for wedding july 3, 1915.. Inside are a list of peope wiith addresses and the gifts given - when received and when thanked. It is fun to see what was a typical gift back them. A great something old for a new bride! The Demarests and Popes were old Bergen county New Jersey families and can be tracked online. The addresses also give you an idea of the New York neighbohoods at that time.. Japan, Scroll Painting, E-maki E-maki or scroll painting is a peculiar form of painting to develop a story by successive scenes that appear one after another as the scroll is unrolled from right to left. The original was probably painted in the twelfth century by a buddhist painter who was a master of the brush. This scroll is a set of three hand rolls illustrating three legends relating to the shigisan temple. The scroll is in a box sized 5 1/2 in long and almost 2 in high. The scroll is in very good condition.. The scroll comes with an explanation in english and japanese.. Very Good.

New York: The MacMillian Company "Any retrospect of the civilization of the United States during the century...neglected,,,the influence of german culture on the higher artistic and intellectual life of the nation." This statement is from the introduction to the book and it is a scholary treatise on the subject that actually is a fascinating read. In addition there is a letter written and signed from the author to a Mr. LeRoy E. Kimball at New York Universitry - dated March 6, 1917. The previous owner noted in pencil on the botom of the letter that the author died in berlin, 8/2/1939. The Recipient, according to the internet, was the author of a piece on James Wilson of Vermont - america's first globe maker. Book is in very good condition although there is a damaged spot on the back cover. The letter is pasted on the inside cover with the bookplate of Kimball. . Signed by Author. Hard Cover. New York: John F. Trow, 1857. This book is in wraps that are fragile but attached and the pages have been hand cut. This was the address by Dr. John Francis at the dedication of the permanent house for the New York Historical Society. When delivered, the speech as noted by the author, was curtailed and was later published in its entirety. The address was entitled - New York during the last half century. Dr. Francis was eminently qualified to deliver this address as he was a long term member of the society and knew many of the prominent citizens of the time that he spoke about. It reads wonderfully -even today and the book also gives the proceedings of the dedication of that time of the library. Example: There was an epidemic of scarlet fever in the summer, there were over 104,000 immigrants from foreign ports.They compare New York to paris and london. Tbe book speaks of the high mortality rates in england at that time. It also refers to the lack of registration of births and deaths of the people of ireland so that accurate pictures of the movement of the Irish cannot be given. There are comments about street cleaning, the disgrace of the city markets, sewers, removal of dead animals, etc. An altogether fascinating book on thre city in 1860 - but especially so for its comments vs England. Book has many statistical tables but also 61 pages of introductory commentary at the begiinning along with commentary attached to the statistical info. 263 pages - book is in very good condition, some foxing. New York: Edmund Jones, 1863. This is the annual city inspector's report for 1862, published in 1863, It compares the health of the city to other sities such as London and paris. The change of inhabitants in various areas has created unhealthy situations whereas they were formerly healthy. People were living in underground cellars and tenament houses. London had prohibitions against the cellars at this time. The book discusses the strikes by laborers and the causes, Public places were being used as dumping grounds, sale of street manure, slaughter houses in the city, livery stabes and their conditions. Filled with statistical tables and comments on same - this is an awesome look back to the 1860' in New york and in some cases London and Paris. New York, 1908. This is a book about the history of New York and the Czechs in New york written by the author Vojan who came to america in 1904 with a PHD from Charles University in Prague. He worked for various Czech newspapers and wrote this book about New York and its Czech community. It is written in Czech but there are 100 illustrations and an oversized pull out map of new york city. Many of the The illutstrations are by Underwood and are not the usual pictures - example - there is a construction picture of the Flatiron Building being built. You can make out the title of all the pictures since they utilize the English titles as much as possible. The map is fascinating albeit in very fragile condition and is torn in places - but is still wonderful to look at. The book itself is worn but in good condition with a decorative cover. Montreal: Cambridge Corporation Limited This is one of the rare Beautiful Britain Royal Canadian Edition versions of the A.C. Black series on Britain. of whiich only 1000 copies were published. This one in particular has beautiful illustrations many of whcih were painted by the author. He explored the older portions of London which have since been "improved" away. He hunted up old documents and carefully checked other resources for accuracy of his discriptions. 294 pages. Of the 75 illustrations - whcih are still as bright as when they were published- 60 of the represented buildings had disappeared at time of publication. His breakdown for the contents almost reads as an itinerary - Southwark; The city and east end; the ward of farringdon without; the inns of court and chancery; the western section.
