Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press (Stated 1st Bison Book Printing/8th Printing, October 1961). Trade paperback, 282 pages. Clean and unmarked, with a square, tight binding. Covers/edges show general shelf/age wear; spine is not creased.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Elinore Pruitt, a widow and mother who washed clothes for a living in Denver, planned to work as a housekeeper for some rancher while learning all she would need to know about homesteading a place for herself. In 1909 she went to work for Clyde Stewart, whose ranch was near Burnt Fork, Wyoming, and within six weeks she married him. "Ranch work seemed to require that we be married first and do our sparking afterward," she wrote Juliet Coney, her former employer. She maintained her independence by filing on a quarter section adjacent to her husband's land and proving it up herself. Her delightful letters, written from the time of her arrival until 1913, authentically depict an Old West that, as Jessamyn West notes in her foreword, has been… Read More

ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR: Bettye Lee Mastin was a reporter on architecture in the Bluegrass. She spent her career informing Kentuckians about their remarkable heritage and built environment. Her writing helped lead to the preservation of many historic structures in the region. Born in Midway and raised in Jessamine County, she was a Phi Beta Kappa journalism graduate of the University of Kentucky. She began reading proof for the Lexington Herald in 1944 and joined the paper full-time in 1950. She wrote more than 2,000 weekly features about homes in Central Kentucky, blending a scholar's depth with a journalist's eye for an interesting story. Her work fueled the local preservation movement, and at Herald management's direction, she became an advocate for preservation and won awards for her work. Mastin also authored and co-authored many chapters, journal articles, and books about Kentucky history, including A… Read More

Age discoloration to edges of front and back covers.Author's Preface (1963): This is a group of events that impressed a growing boy who moved to an Ozark farm at the age of four years in the year of 1893. He came there from the flat muddy swamplands of northern Illinois. His memory of the northland was largely of Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Christmastime and a tin horn that made a loud noise. Most of all, he remembered the periodic trips of Grandma who came each Christmas and later moved south to live with them. He always remembered not only the endless mud in the North, but his sore, bruised bare feet that trod the Ozark hills. His adventures were priceless, his work was backbreaking, but his spirit and joy of living were the foundation of a bountiful… Read More
