Dustjacket a little chipped at edges. Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf for one of the book’s printers ‘For Ian Wilson, with the author’s warm gratitude for a magnificent job, David Cleghorn Thomson, January 1961’.

Edinburgh: Reprinted by A. Neill & Co., 1801. 8vo, pp. 17, [1]. Disbound. A touch of spotting. A translation into Latin by clergyman, historian and correspondent of Robert Burns John Skinner (1721-1807) of a Scots poem long-if-fancifully attributed to King James I. Also issued as part of a collection of macaronic poetry and translations.

Presentation inscription from author on title page: ‘To Ashley, With all good wishes- William Douglas Home’. A collection of letters from war and prison by William Douglas Home (1912-1992), dramatist, politician, and younger brother of prime minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

Loanhead: MacDonald Publishers, 1978. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 39, [1]. Original orange card wrappers printed in black. A little sunning to wrappers.

Edinburgh: Reprinted by A. Neill & Co, 1801. 8vo, pp. 57, [1]. Disbound. A touch of faint spotting. A scarce reprinting of this translation from Ovid into Scots, by Robert Forbes. Little is known of him - he seems to have been born in Buchan but plied his trade as a hosier in London. Evidently an educated man who ‘possessed a large fund of the humorous,’ he also published another excerpt from Ovid and a few original pieces (Walker, The Bards of Bon-Accord 1375-1860, 1887). This edition was also issued as part of a collection of macaronic verse and other translations between Scots and Latin.

Ink ownership inscription to front flyleaf. A bright copy of the novel published following Murdoch’s Booker Prize win, which was slated by the critics. Graham Hough wrote for the LRB that ‘The title promises more than the performance. There is only one nun and no soldiers at all.’

London: MacGibbon & Kee, 1969. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 57, [1]. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, peach dustjacket printed in brown and purple. Dark stain to top edge of book, showing in top margin throughout.

Birmingham: Privately Printed for Bache Matthews, 1926. NO. 95 OF 100 COPIES, 8vo, ff. 8. Original orange paper wrappers, printed label to front. Just a touch of spotting. Wrappers chipped to edges and lightly soiled. A selection of work from John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham (1648-1721) printed by Bache Matthews ‘for my friends’ and with space for a named inscription, although this one is blank.

Preston: Akros Publications, 1970. FIRST EDITION, NO. 15 OF 55 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, folio, pp. 28. Stapled as issued in original white card wrappers, dark green dustjacket printed in white. A few small marks to dustjacket. Signed and numbered in red ink by Duncan Glen to limitation page, folded A4 order form dated January 1970 loosely inserted. No. 15 of 55 signed and numbered copies, from a total print run of 355.

Preston: Akros Publications, 1977. NO. 218 OF 300 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, small 4to, pp. 12, [2]. Original red card wrappers printed in black Front wrapper a little marked to spine edge. Folded compliments slip from the author loosely inserted. An essay published for the 85th birthday of Hugh MacDiarmid by his long-time supporter, the poet and publisher Duncan Glen. This copy has a compliments slip loosely inserted from Glen dated 27/8/77, in which he thanks a Mr Beresford for his continued support.

Lightly soiled, tiny closed tear to top edge of outer wrapper. The 30th Ariel pamphlet, with 2 illustrations from artist and poet David Jones.

The 38th and final Ariel Poem pamphlet from Faber and Faber, with attractive illustrations by Barnett Freedman, that to the first page in full colour.

Presentation inscription to flyleaf: ‘The Richardson from The Smith’. Smith’s poem was commissioned by the BBC for the bicentenary of the birth of Robert Burns. This copy was presented to BBC producer Robin Richardson.
